UMPD Officers recognized at Wednesday’s Hometown Heroes Night

Congratulations to Sgt. Robert Jenshoej, Cpl. John Fitzgerald, and Cpl. Mathew Suthard (Pictured left to right). Yesterday, the University of Maryland Athletic Department recognized our officers at the men’s basketball game for their dedication and service to our community.

On September 4, 2015, Sgt. Jenshoej was working the men’s soccer game at Ludwig Field. At the end of the game, a surge of fans in the bleachers caused the safety rail to break. Sgt. Jenshoej saw this and ...quickly ran to the railing to prevent fans from falling through. Thanks to Sgt. Jenshoej’s quick response, no injuries occurred.

On September 9, 2015, Corporal Fitzgerald and Corporal Suthard, members of UMPD, Explosives Detection K-9 Unit were at Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport, conducting a training exercise. While leaving the airport, Cpl. Fitzgerald and Cpl. Suthard responded to a call of a women choking. Once on scene, a Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Officer was preforming chest compressions. The woman was not breathing. Cpl. Suthard assisted by providing updates on the status of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Cpl. Fitzgerald took over chest compressions from the MDTA officer.

Because of the officers’ quick actions, the women survived.

Chief Mitchell will formally recognize these officers and more at an upcoming promotional ceremony.

Thank you for all that you do to help keep us safe!
